Chicago’s own Paul Abella’s Questionable Decisions could be called a few different things, and they’d probably all be correct: Jazz, Creative Music, Punk, they all describe the sounds that this quintet makes. Coming from disparate parts of the Chicago music scene, it’s no wonder that they sound the way that they do. Guitarist Alex Wing and vibraphonist Preyas Roy are both part of the vibrant South Side Avant-Garde Jazz scene that Chicago is rightly famous for. Woodwind specialist Michael Levin has played in just about every situation known to man, and it sounds like it in this space where he’s allowed to follow his muse wherever it leads him. Bassist Chris Bernhardt is a veteran of the Chicago Blues and Jazz scenes, and his sense of groove, time and thump is vital to the Questionable Decisions sound. And then there’s Paul Abella. Playing the Peruvian box drum known as the cajon, he gives the group an earthy wallop that sets them apart from many of their contemporaries. Proclaiming influences as varied as Sonny Sharrock, Eddie Harris and Fugazi while playing free improvisations and the occasional Black Sabbath tune, Questionable Decisions is making Avant-Garde Jazz for the Masses.
